As a device manufacturer with extensive expertise in the field of mobile device testing and certification, Rohde & Schwarz recently announced that it has joined the FiRa Alliance and will contribute to the organization’s establishment of an Ultra-Wideband (UWB) device certification program.
FiRa, short for “Precision Ranging,” is committed to ensuring interoperability among multiple devices through compliance and certification programs to grow the Ultra-Wideband (UWB) ecosystem. The FiRa Alliance focuses on three core UWB services: hands-free access control, location-based services, and device-to-device services, all based on the latest UWB secure ranging technology defined by IEEE 802.15.4z.
The biggest advantage of the UWB standard is the centimeter-accurate position measurement, allowing automatic opening of entrances or the introduction of positioning capabilities into indoor environments when a UWB device approaches. UWB also features secure device-to-device data communication with very low power consumption. The extremely high bandwidth and extremely low power density make it easy for UWB signals to share spectrum with other narrowband and wideband systems without causing interference.
